The NYT published a story (that even the Donald Trump-hating Washington Post wouldn’t touch) which ostensibly brought a new (30-year-old) sexual assault accusation against SCOTUS justice Brett Kavanaugh — BUT that somehow conveniently left out the fact that the alleged victim — does not recall the incident. There are no exceptions in journalism ethics that allow this, it’s slander, libel, and evidence of malice, all-in-one.
At first, if you a conservative, and support Kavanaugh, this is an outrageous offense, a misuse of the NYT platform — and cause for further alarm that our journalistic standards have reached an even deeper low.
But upon reflection, I’m not so sure.
I think the NYT is helping Trump.
I’m not sure about whether they are doing this on purpose, but they are definitely helping him politically.
The Kavanaugh hearings were a disgrace and they brought the lies of the modern Democratic Party into clear focus for millions of Americans who are not partisan one way or the other. But emotions and memories of outrages like this fade quickly. The president probably — only has a one percent overall bump lingering from the Kavanaugh debacle — unless of course — the Dems and the NYT raise the entire issue again, closer to the 2020 election, with an even flimsier claim, which of course, they are NOW doing.
This error is so blatant, so stupid, so obvious and so pointless (it’s hard to impeach a SCOTUS justice) I wonder if it isn’t intended to actually help the president. There are some crazy leftists in New York that still believe the NYT of course, but I don’t think Trump is counting on any electoral votes from that state. And outside of New York, where the NYT still had some influence and credibility, this further tarnishes that reputation and influence.
I’ve had a theory for years, that the NYT was a mouthpiece for the CIA, a tool, a newspaper they controlled through the selective release of information, to influence public opinion in the United States. And where they used that power to hurt Trump, I felt vindicated in that view.
But, what all this Kavanaugh mess shows me, is that the deep state actors who control the military-industrial complex, multi-national corporations and the intelligence establishment, has, at least — some — team members that are Trump fans.
A NYT editorial — supporting Trump — would be attacked, but a story like this, which appears to be an attack on the president, but that effectively activates his base and simultaneously makes Democratic Party leaders look like fools, is a much more subtle, but effective form of support. I’ll know soon if I’m right. Here is the litmus test, if former President Barack Obama comes out this week with a statement supporting Kavanaugh, which sitting SCOTUS Ruth Bader Ginsburg already has done — then you’ll know, the NYT editors did this on purpose, got caught, and now realize they got duped into helping Trump, and need to backtrack. If he piles on and calls for a Kavanaugh impeachment, then you know this was not purposeful — and the editors at the NYT are dumber than a box of rocks and are providing ammunition to their enemies.
And of course, Trump, genius that he is, has figured this all out — here is a tidbit from the White House West Wing reads — just out this morning.
“A Columbia Journalism Review poll released this year found that half of all Americans have ‘hardly any confidence at all’ in the media, which beat out even Congress as the institution for which the public has the lowest confidence,” Marc Thiessen writes in The Washington Post.
“It’s not hard to see why. Last week, CNN reported that the CIA was forced to pull a highly placed source inside the Kremlin because of concerns that President Trump might burn him — when it turns out the decision to extract the source was made before Trump took office because of leaks from senior Obama administration officials.”
Then over the weekend, The New York Times published a story claiming a “previously unreported” sexual assault allegation against Justice Brett Kavanaugh. “One small problem: In the book, Pogrebin and Kelly write that the female student in question ‘refused to discuss the incident’ and that ‘several of her friends said she does not recall it.’” The Times left that part out of its initial story, later adding a “clarification.”
One more thing the Times decided not to mention: The man accusing Kavanaugh in its story “was a member of Bill Clinton’s legal team at the same time that Kavanaugh was working for independent counsel Kenneth Starr” during the Lewinsky investigation.”
And finally, there is this. The 2 NYT “reporters” that wrote this story, claim they included the part about the alleged victim not remembering the incident in the story — and they blamed the editors at the NYT for removing the information!
This is highly unusual. Particularly if you need to keep your job. They also said, “Everyone we talked to couldn’t speak more highly of him (Kavanaugh), on both sides of the aisle.” Which of course, begs the question from a bullhorn — why did they write the story in the first place? I think it was to help Trump and I think they have accomplished that.
