Grassley is Grassley, Thank God
Integrity, honesty, love of country, bull doggedness, frankness, attention to detail, love of god, family, and the US Constitution, these all describe Senator Chuck Grassley — but they don’t capture his essence, which is something else altogether. He’s also funny, polite (mostly), gracious and witty. I think most of the witty things he says; pass right by the committee audiences, but never underestimate him.
Grassley has two sides, the public persona, which lags the private persona by MONTHS, this is why he’s almost never publicly wrong, the things you are seeing his office release today, he’s been reading, thinking about, investigating and researching for weeks, months and in some cases, years. I’ve almost never heard him utter a question I wasn’t pretty sure he already knew the answer to.
Readers of the blog know, I’ve been spotlighting Grassley’s work on the Russia electioneering issues for months now, because as The Hill notes below — and others, are figuring out — the first person to really understand the whole picture on this, will be Grassley.
My blog predictions and concerns have been proven right so far on many different angles in this erupting scandal — and I did this against the direct reporting of the NYT and WaPo — but I won’t lie to you the Faithful Five, this is not because I have a “deep throat” in either party or the FBI, but because I simply watch Grassley, read what he puts out, and listen carefully to his hearings and interviews. Grassley is better than a “deep throat” type source because I don’t have to worry about motive or veracity with him, he’s a proven commodity — Grassley cannot be bought and never lies.
I believe I have a front row seat to this entire mess, just by carefully watching this one Senator.
Actually I monitor a few as the FF know; but he’s among my favorites. I love Heidi Heitkamp too, but she’s been awful quiet lately, to my dismay. Anyway here is The Hill piece, finally acknowledging, months after it became obvious, a fact the MSM still has not noticed or reported on — concerning a scandal they have written thousands of inch’s about – Chuck Grassley is the man.
Here is The Hill:
The Hill — Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has emerged as a pivotal player in the controversy surrounding President Trump and Russia.
As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Grassley has threatened to subpoena Trump family members and associates over their roles in the controversy surrounding Russia’s involvement in last year’s presidential election.
He has also defended Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whom he had privately urged to recuse himself from the Justice Department’s investigation of Russian meddling given the former Alabama senator’s role in Trump’s campaign.
Grassley warned the White House that there will be no confirmation hearings this year on a new attorney general if Sessions is dismissed.
In June, Grassley criticized the White House Office of Legal Counsel for an opinion holding that only committee chairs have the constitutional authority to make official inquiries of the executive branch, not rank-and-file members.
Grassley shot that down emphatically. “This is nonsense,” he wrote in a letter to Trump. The actions highlight Grassley’s reputation as a dogged investigator — and an independent streak that has led him to embrace government whistleblowers.
This is NONSENSE, Grassley wrote the President. I love this man, what can I say, he doesn’t hold a Schumer type press fest when he farts to spread the smell, he candidly deals it out to POTUS, and never sends a presser.
The Hill — “He’s got a strong sense of right and wrong, and I think that sense even surpasses party, which around here is a real virtue,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.
Grassley and Feinstein displayed notable cooperation in their efforts to secure testimony from Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman, and Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son.
Committee staff are negotiating to sit down with both men. The committee is expected to seek information from Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and a senior White House adviser, as well.
“This is vintage Charles Grassley. He believes in strong oversight and he’s going to be as aggressive as he feels like he needs to be in order to get it done,” said Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (Texas).
“Chuck Grassley has a reputation for rigorous oversight unmatched perhaps by anybody else in the Senate.”
Whatever Grassley finally determines, you can bet it will carefully researched, investigated and it will be fair — whatever side committed the sins.
Grassley’s committee is also trying to obtain memos that former FBI Director James Comey wrote of his interactions with Trump before his firing. His staff has reviewed the memos but doesn’t possess them.
Grassley said in an interview that no one at the White House or within the Senate GOP leadership has tried to dissuade him.
“I’ve had no face-to-face contact with anybody, I’ve had no phone calls from anybody, not only my colleagues but not from the White House either,” he told The Hill.
You want to know why nobody tries to spin and/or pressure Grassley?
Because they know before they even start, it’s pointless.
