There is a culture war erupting in this country right now — and that is not a bad thing.
I’m 57, a white male, and I’ve lived and worked within 50 miles of my birth place, (Suburban Hospital in Bethesda), all my life. I’m pretty sure, this is my first culture war, and I must admit, I am enjoying it immensely.
During most of my work life, I was in the newspaper business. At that time I used to push away offers to transition — into a variety of different fields — because (this sounded corny at the time) I really believed newspapers made a difference.
I am now convinced not only that I was right, but that I underestimated how important they were, and are, (despite their near extinction) to Democracy in this country. Newspapers used to be where the culture, and accompanying political war — were conducted. Nevertheless, most of my life in that business was boring compared to the political scene of today. If you want to live in interesting times, you got your wish.
The new media paradigm is dangerously out of control. Everyday you listen to the news in this country, you are being lied to, manipulated, and kept away from information contradicting the narrative of the station owners and/or content programmers.
All sides do this.
AND in TV land, it’s worse than coordinated collusion, which would have a center – this is the mass practice of ideological loyalty above all other concerns – thus, the left in particular — has institutionalized their narrative to the point, that liberal bona fides are now a requirement trumping competency, objectivity, accomplishment, and even education for these influential positions. Did this start when policy makers began inter-marrying news anchors and media moguls? It didn’t help, that’s for sure.
Both sides have outlets with brainwashed anchors, talent, programmers and even schedulers.
The knowledge base these camps share and/or agree even happened — is getting narrower every year. In other words, we’re in a culture war.
We’ve had culture wars before. It isn’t the end of the world.
This time however, we won’t have newspapers to restore the balance. In fact, the medium and/or business model I think will restore the balance – hasn’t been invented yet. Google is a tool, not a platform. Facebook is ubiquitous, but organic, hence irrelevant. NBC, CBS and ABC are so corrupt, so dedicated to the Democratic Party narrative, not even their viewers believe them anymore, except in California.
Fox has ratings, but without their architect, Roger the predator, they will fade.
Reddit has split in two. Half the active audience is all in one Trump dedicated forum, THE_DONALD, and they are literally at war all day, every day, with the other half of the active base, that dominates all the other subs. The administrator of Reddit, is not a Trump fan, so the Donald forum has faced an active headwind, but they fight on.
All of this nonsense is pulling harder on the threads of civility and consensus by people of all walks. It’s apparently even destroying some marriages.
But, as Jefferson believed, I believe, a little revolution every now and then is probably — not a bad thing.
