China to invade Taiwan # VI
On March 6, two years ago — Taiwan’s Minister of National Defense Yen Ming told the national legislature’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee the country’s military could hold out “at least one month” alone against a Chinese invasion.
According to the article this quote came from on the USNI news service –that estimate was;
“A sharp reminder of how much the strategic equation has turned against Taiwan. The days of Taiwan being an impregnable fortress appear to be over.”
The Chinese PLA believes they have cut that number to a week or less — with their recent military base building efforts in the South China Sea and a leadership vacuum in American politics.
They calculate (correctly?) that a week is not enough time for the U.S. or her allies to respond and that once the invasion was over — the U.S. would simply walk away and accept the situation. Ouch.
