Happy Fourth of July
To most people this means the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution but I think about James Madison on the Fourth because he was the Founding Father I think that had the most lasting impact on the Constitution in a kind of unheralded way.
His pre constitution argument in the Federalist Papers that “violent faction” caused by “income inequality” would be the biggest problem our new nation faced over it’s expected future was prescient beyond comprehension.
This was the problem old nations had faced and Madison wanted to make sure we had a Democracy strong enough to fight a war and then well balanced enough to return power to the people after such wars – AND look out for the little guy along the way — with legal institutions that preserved civil and human rights.
Madison did the job right, we have the constitutional framework we need, even to this day, it’s the best in the world –we just need to live up to Madison’s expectations as Americans and elect leaders that represent those values.
