Not a huge Obama fan BUT I will give him credit for visiting Hiroshima and making a real connection with the Japanese people, not an easy thing to do.

Now he should move swiftly and spend that political capital and also cement the Japanese/American relationship further by announcing a mission change for our US base on Okinawa (its 25% of the land mass, it can be smaller) that will be part of a long-term change in the relationship between the United States Navy and the Japanese Navy. My plan, which I’ve written exrensively on before, is actually simple.

The Japanese are an island people and they need to protect a lot of ocean and therefore need US Super carriers, something I propose we allow rhem to purchase, deploy, and be trained by the US in the use of, under a joint operational agreement. This base could be repurposed toward the eventuality of this agreement.
I’d do the same thing with Australia. This gets the Navy back the 100B their CapEx budget is missing over the next 10 years and is a great move defensively without saber rattling.
