Why I’d still prefer Heitkamp for President

My few remaining friends ask me; why Karl, do you support a candidate for president, Heidi Heitkamp, who isn’t even in the race?

As my previous piece points out, I understand the math. But my heart is with the Senator from North Dakota and here is my reasoning. For 2 years now, the House, President and Senate have played political games and accomplished nothing except budget and mandatory legislation. A big fat goose egg.

During this lull in activity while the world spun on, Heidi Heitkamp passed a bill allowing U.S. oil producers to sell US crude abroad, a move long overdue and just so as it happens, badly necessary right now.

This was quite an accomplishment and was a bipartisan effort but appeared to be all for naught as the president not only announced his veto, he picked on the greedy people of North Dakota who would benefit — while the people of the other 49 states would be hurt/ This was typical Obama administration behavior, take an ironclad position against your own allies, insult them, attempt to isolate them, and then use brute power and intimidation against them.

I couldn’t imagine how Senator Heitkamp must have felt and I was expecting backlash – but as always she surprised my acidic nature, showed class, rose above the noise and humiliation associated with being attacked by the leader of her own party and then using her mastery of her profession — got her friends on both sides of the aisle to add the oil export ban lifting bill to the budget (making it veto proof).

It became law today. The ONLY major legislation in 2 years to be crafted, get bi-partisan support and make it past the upside down Obama White House. And is she crowing, taking bows, and building her “Brand”?

No, of course not, none of that. That’s why I love her and she would be a great president, because she would actually do the job, not use it for ego fuel.
