I propose a new beginning, a rebirth of the United States as the land of the free, the brave and the moderate.
The far left of our political spectrum is bankrupt, adrift with new ideas like wage control (minimum wage) and LGBT equality (a 2% demographic, if that); and a bag full of failed ideas that stretch from the war on poverty in our cities all the way to the entire Middle East — which is aflame with liberal appeasement. Hillary and Obama are quite candidly, such immense failures, we may end up in anothe financial crisis and/or war with Russia over their combined incompetence.
The far right is just as big a disgrace. Throwing all caution, reason and good people (Boehner) to the dogs, the far right has calcified around a set of narrow core principles known only to them (the Freedom Caucus) that must read like a KKK klaven statement. This Trump madness just makes it even more nauseating.
The concurrent set of domestic, financial and world problems demand a new solution and I have it here for you today.
The two moderate minorities from both parties constitute a huge majority if they could unite under common leadership. I suggest Speaker John Boehner on the Republican side and Senator Heidi Heitkamp from the Democratic side. Instead of retiring, Boehner needs to wheel on the Freedom Caucus crazies, flank them with a move they’ll never see coming, and I suggest 3 bold lightening strikes to get the ball rolling.
First, declare for the Republican Presidential nomination. Boehner is the anti-Trump and the Republicans need an anti-Trump worse than Superman’s enemies needed kryptonite.
Secondly he should announce – concurrent with his presidential announcement — that he also plans to ask Heitkamp to serve as his running mate and Vice President — should he win the nomination and election. Heitkamp of course must simultaneously announce her agreement to the plan. Together they would represent the brightest, most ethical, most concerned, (and capable) team the entire U.S. political universe has to offer.
Lastly Boehner and Heitkamp need to rebrand this new moderate party that will pass immigration reform, is pro-business but environmentally conscious, competent, conservative fiscally and militarily — but also socially liberal. Abraham Lincoln did this over slavery and todays Republican Party is the result. It seems like its time to do this again.
This is not just a crazy idea — look around you with open eyes — Obama has fractured, disgraced, and led the Democratic Party to powerlessness and possibly the country to war — and the Republican Party literally can not find a candidate for Speaker of the House — they are so dysfunctional, fractured, and even treasonously myopic. I’d cry if I didn’t see a way out.
We’re in trouble and these two wonderful people could help us – and I’m very doubtful anybody else could even do 25% of what these two could and would accomplish as a team. Come on John and Heidi, please have lunch, please talk about how strong a new party built from the political middle could be — in a United States burned by decades of excess from the far left and the far right.
