China’s Xi, Japan’s Abe meet on sidelines of Jakarta summit

This doesn’t seem like a big deal but it is. I was anticipating this sideline chat to lead to a real summit including SK later this year BUT I was worried when Abe sent a potted plant to the shrine of the Japanese war dead (including their war criminals) just this week — that this might upset this, but Xi kept his cool and that’s good.

The leaders of China and Japan held talks on Wednesday for only the second time since taking office, seeking to repair a relationship damaged by territorial disputes and a bitter wartime legacy, a Japanese official said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe were holding discussions on the sidelines of a summit in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, the official told AFP, speaking anonymously.
